In 1947, after selling groceries door to door, Louis J. Paradis (1893-1968) opened a grocery store in the Roy building on East Main Street in Fort Kent. The business eventually passed on to Paradis's sons and moved to a new location on West Main Street. New locations were established in Caribou, Madawaska, and Brewer. At one point, the Paradis family employed nearly 500 people in Maine. A fixture in Fort Kent, Paradis Shop'n Save was acquired by the Hannaford chain of supermarkets in 2024.

Louis Paradis, who appears on the right in the photograph, was French-Canadian; he also had Acadian roots through his grandmother, Henriette Thériault. Heavily invested in his community, he belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Rotary Club, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He married Flora Austin (1904-1993). Together they had fifteen children.
