Image Info Elise Fellows White inscribed the reverse of this painting with a note, “This was drawn by E.F. when eleven to twelve years old. My Maggini violin. Sold in 1922 in N.Y.” Reports indicate White sold the violin for $200, equal to $3,500 in 2024.

White’s patron, Aimee Sargent of Massachusetts, purchased the Maggini violin for her while Fellows-White was a student at the New England Conservatory in Boston. While perhaps an 1890s copy instrument, Sargent had the means to buy a genuine 17th-century Giovanni Paolo Maggini (1580-circa 1630) violin from Italy.
