Image Info Francis H. Fassett constructed Portland's City Building in 1869, using the remains of its predecessor, which was destroyed in the 1866 fire. Fassett preserved a significant portion of James H. Rand's initial design from 1862, including the facade and the use of Nova Scotia Albert sandstone for its dressing. However, he modified the dome, giving it an octagonal drum shape and adding round windows. Visitors could ascend to the lantern of the cupola, where they could enjoy breathtaking views of the city.

This photograph was taken on Congress Street, near the corner of Myrtle Street, looking west. This building burned in 1906 and Portland's current City Hall, a U-shaped granite structure that stands in the same place today.
