D.L. Fernald & Co., a fish inspecting and packing business, comprised two buildings at the end of Union Wharf. The Henrietta Frances, a fishing schooner owner by inspector David L. Fernald, is docked at the end of the pier.

This photograph appeared in an album that Portland civil engineer William S. Edwards compiled. His colleague, George N. Fernald, was the son of the fish inspector. The image bears the inscription, "Sch. Henrietta Frances, Union Wharf. Apr 9, 1887."
