Image Info Maine Central Railroad offered special fares to visit Portland to see Charles A. Lindbergh and his plane, the "Spirit of St. Louis." Lindbergh made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20-21, 1927. He wrote a book entitled "We" about his adventures.

Lindbergh was to be in Portland on July 23, 1927, but could not land due to fog. He tried again the next day and was again deterred by fog. He landed at Old Orchard Beach and drove to Portland to give a talk.
