In 1855, Portland's City Hall was located in the market building that gave the name to Market Square, approximately where the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is in Monument Square. After City Hall was relocated to Congress Street in 1860, the market building became known by several names, including Old City Hall, Old Town Hall, and Old Market House.

The sign for Moxie shows the development and rising demand for soft drinks and their evolution from cure-all tonics. The sign reads: "The Famous Moxie Nerve Food Beverage."
