Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow created this rough survey, labeled "no. 2," of the St. John River as part of a series completed during 1843 and 1844 under the commission established for the 5th article of the Treaty of Washington, 1842. These maps aimed to determine the northern borders of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. This map is part of a larger archive, the Thomas Barclay Collection (Coll. 26).
