This was the family home of Peleg Wadsworth (1748-1829) and his family. His daughter Zilpah, who married Stephen Longfellow, lived in the house with her family, including children Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, (1807-1882), a noted poet; and Anne Longfellow Pierce, (1810-1901), who donated the house to the Maine Historical Society.
