Image Info The Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built in 1889-91 to honor veterans of the Civil War.

It was designed by Franklin Simmons. Its inscription reads: "Portland, To Her Sons Who Died for the Union." The statue is also known as "Our Lady of Victories."
The area where the statue is located is now known as "Monument Square."
