Image Info Maine General Hospital was built at the top of Bramhall Hill in Portland's West End neighborhood. At the time, the Prom was unpaved and a wire fence stretched along either side. The hilltop location was selected to maximize the circulation of fresh air around and through the building. This was thought to help curb the spread of diseases, as were many other interior specifications of the building.
