Image Info A. Rosenthal, a retailer in Berlin, Germany sold this coat during the 1890s. Over the course of over nearly 100 years, the coat found its way to South Portland, where is was eventually donated to Westbrook College on 1983, and later transferred to Maine Historical Society.

The dark green velvet "opera" coat includes corded silk trim and leg of mutton sleeves, with a standing collar. The front opening is trimmed with cut ostrich feathers. The front shoulders and entire back are covered with a dense black passementerie (elaborate trim-work) and braid trim. The coat is lined in a dark green quilted sateen, and it has an interior belt. The coat is made up of eight panels of fabric.
