Eleanor Roosevelt’s time in Maine extended beyond family sojourns up the coast to Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada.

Roosevelt traveled throughout Maine, including the town of Mount Vernon, where two of her friends, Elisabeth Marbury and Elizbeth Arden, each owned homes. Famed cosmetics mogul Elizabeth Arden opened a spa that straddled the towns of Mount Vernon and Rome, Maine. Roosevelt visited Arden’s “Maine Chance Spa” on various occasions.

This photograph of Roosevelt may have been taken at the “Maine Chance Spa” or at Elisabeth Marbury’s home. Newspaper photographers simply marked the image “Eleanor Roosevelt, Mt. Vernon.” The photographers captured a handful of images from the same day, each under or near the same tree.
