Image Info

On June 1, 1917 the Cumberland Shipbuilding Company photographed its future location in South Portland. Fort Gorges can be seen in the background.

The Cumberland Shipyard was a part of the Cumberland Shipbuilding Company, which was owned by James C. Hamlen. Established to meet World War I shipbuilding demands, the business was a side-venture for Hamlen, as he was already president of J.H. Hamlen & Son Incorporated.
