The Cumberland Shipyard was a part of the Cumberland Shipbuilding Company, which was owned by James C. Hamlen. Established to meet World War I shipbuilding demands, the business was a side-venture for Hamlen, as he was already president of J.H. Hamlen & Son Incorporated.
