Image Info The National War Garden Commission, brain child of philanthropist Charles Lathrop Pack, distributed propaganda posters to entice Americans in supporting the war effort through establishing 'victory gardens.' During WWI, American citizens were encouraged to plant and maintain their own gardens to reduce consumption of mass produced food, ease the stress on the U.S. agricultural industry, as well as contribute goods to the cause. Americans were also encouraged to can and dry their home-grown produce as a way to increase reserve stocks.
