Image Info Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, built as a supporting fort to Fort Preble, was fully manned prior to and during World War I. Disappearing guns were added to battlements at Fort Williams, as well as a some other forts in the Greater Portland area, as coastal defense. Men from the Coast Artillery Corps were stationed at the forts before and during WWI.
