This poster announces the 105th annual Drill and Ball of the Portland Light Infantry, with music by Chandler's First Regiment Band.

Members of the Portland Light Infantry served in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. It existed as a volunteer militia unit before the President's call for volunteers in April 1861.

Chandler's First Regiment Band was founded in 1827 as the "Portland Band." Under Chandler's direction, beginning in 1843, the group became the premiere band in the state. Chandler's band presented during the siege of Ft. Sumter and weeks later volunteered to transition to a regimental band. The band officially renamed itself Chandler's Band in January 1872. Daniel Chandler (1818-1902) led the band until he retired in 1892, and made his son, William Chandler (1857-1922), director.
