In the early years of the mills they celebrated the lighting of the lamps for the dark winter season with a "Lighting Up Ball"; likewise there was a "Blowing Out Ball" in the spring.
This postcard referred to the bridge from which this view was taken as the Saco Bridge, although it was more generally known as the Main Street Bridge.
