Image Info The David Cummings and Company mill was in need of a steady supply of shoeboxes by the late 1800s, when the mill's 350 employees manufactured nearly 5000 pairs of shoes per day. The Cummings factory building (which still stands as of 2016 on Norton Street) was constructed about 1872.

The factory continued to operate as the South Berwick Shoe, Inc., and then as the Duchess Shoe Company. It closed in the early 1990s.
