Detail of William Whipple signature from the Dr. John S. H. Fogg Autograph Collection. This letter, signed September 2, 1776, was written in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Josiah Bartlett in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Among talking about his life on a war ship, Whipple speaks about his unhappiness that his assembly's committee had issued a large amount of paper money into the national economy without first asking the Continental Treasury. Because of it, the West India Company's goods dropped significantly.

Whipple was born in Kittery, Maine.
