This is an E. Joseph Leighton postcard of fish weirs at Tarbox Cove. Tarbox Cove is on the Sheepscot River at the south end of Westport Island.

Weir fishing was popular in the early 1900's for the trapping of herring. Wooden stakes or stone obstructions were arranged in tidal waters to direct the passage of fish. Seines or scoops were then used to load the fish into the sardine boats for transport to Bath or other ports for canning.
