Image Info Free Will Baptists founded Bates College in Lewiston in 1855. Bates administrators promoted the cause of temperance, believing alcohol inhibited a person's free will. Perhaps the Bates students in this staged scene are satirizing the reformist movement with their flasks, spittoon, and gambling.
