Lin Rideout (left), forester for Pejepscot Paper Company, Edwin Cromwell (middle), sawmill owner from Westport Island, and Bill Wright (right), owner of a pulpwood trucking business from Woolwich, survey a fire lane on MacMahan Island. MacMahan Island is situated in the Sheepscot River between Westport and Georgetown.

They cut the fire lane from east to west to separate cottages from forested land. Cromwell (1908-2001) ran the sawmill that carried out this operation. His mill operated in the 1940's and 1950's on Westport Island. The lumber harvested from the MacMahan operation was used to make pulp for paper production at the Pejepscot Paper Company.
