Image Info An Indian person drew this sketch of the Schoodic Lake Passamaquoddy village on Lewis Island for Jesuit missionary Eugene Vetromile (1819-1881). Italian by birth, Vetromile ministered to Penobscot and Passamaquoddy communities from 1858 to 1881.

Vetromile wrote about the culture and history of Maine tribes, concentrating on linguistics. A version of this rough sketch appears in his 1866 book, The Abnakis and their History. A caption on the drawing says, "Louis island Indian village on the Skoodic lakes, Me. Made by an Indian."
