Show Details
The machine takes blocks of pine and cuts them into splints -- or strips -- which are then turned into matches.
The machine, which is 5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long, is shown at the Portland Company workshop.
Berst Forster Dixfield began in 1913 as the Forster Manufacturing Co. in Oakland. It made toothpicks and clothespins. Berst-Forster-Dixfield of New York operated it from 1923-1946.
