Image Info Workers use a steam-powered derrick to place the last log on top of a boom pier along the Androscoggin River in the winter of 1893. Boom piers were constructed to separate logs that were being floated downriver to go to the different mills. The sloping upstream base of this pier will be covered with heavy planks for protection from the ice.
