Willis Whitney, an employee of General Electric, prepared carbonized cellulose filaments at very high temperatures, resulting in a filament that took on metallic properties.

In an effort to design bulbs that were more efficient and lasted longer, these lamps were desirable as they could be operated at higher temperatures, giving more light per watt.
