A Tichnor Brothers publicity postcard shows the Maine Turnpike toll booth in Kittery. Completed in 1947, the Turnpike was designed to carry residents and tourists from Kittery to Fort Kent.

The caption reads, "Toll House at Kittery, Maine on the Maine Turnpike."

Only the second modern toll road in the country, following the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the Maine Turnpike was the first superhighway paved entirely in asphalt and not concrete. The turnpike was nicknamed the "Mile-a-Minute" highway because it was the first time many Mainers had driven as fast as 60 miles per hour.
