Labelled on the rear, “John Wilcox fish-house and landing, Main St.” The Wilcox herring stand was located on the shore slightly west of the point where South Street terminates at Main Street (later also Route 189).

Lubec businessman and Selectman John Irving Wilcox acquired the property in 1914, and it remained in that family until September 1949 when purchased by Sherman Denbow. The house fronting Main Street opposite South Street was known as the “Forewinds House” and was later owned by Denbow and then by Leroy and Annie Gerrish, The house still stands as of 2011. The driveway to the stand was just west of the house, angling down the steep bank to the shore.

West Lubec native Bernard M. Ross says that the photo “looks like it was one of our more difficult winters with all the drift ice and snow around it.” Ross believes that the stand was last operated by Garnet Green in the late 1930s.
