Peleg Wadsworth, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the house on land he purchased in 1784 on what was then Back Street. He built the brick home in 1785-1786. Peleg and Elizabeth Wadsworth raised their 10 children in the house. Their daughter Zilpah married Stephen Longfellow in 1804 and they lived in the house. Their son, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, grew up there.
