Image Info Gen. William T. Sherman (1820-1891) was best known for his march across the south, also called a "scorched earth" campaign.

Sherman, serving under General U.S. Grant, was active in the campaigns at Vicksburg and the Union gaining control of Tennessee. He became commanding general of the army in 1869 and served in that post until 1883.
The photograph is part of a collection held by an Maine soldier in the 16th Maine volunteer infantry.
