Image Info William W. Eaton of Brunswick, at age 27, was appointed hospital steward of the 16th Maine Infantry on June 27, 1862. When he was mustered into U.S. service on Aug. 14, 1862, he was commissioned as assistant surgeon.

Eaton became surgeon in November 1864. He served until June 5, 1865.
Eaton was one of a number of soldiers in the 16th Maine taken prison at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. After the war, he relocated to Danvers, Massachusetts.
