The John Holmes mansion, built in 1802 by Alfred's most prominent statesman, is known for its pillars and wrought iron bows and arrows, said to have been made by the Griffins, Alfred blacksmiths.

Holmes helped establish the county court in Alfred, chaired the committee that separated Maine from Massachusetts by its recommendation, and was Maine's first U.S. senator.
