Image Info Israel and Martha Benjamin Washburn settled on a Livermore farm that they named Norlands in 1809. There they operated a store before turning to farming.

They had 10 children, Israel Jr., Algernon, Elihu, Cadwaller, Martha, Charles, Samuel, Mary, William and Caroline. The sons were noted soldiers, politicians and entrepreneurs.
The family built a library, along with a meeting house at the farm.
