Image Info The portrait of sisters Lorena Dunton Pinkham (1886-?), left, and Carrie Dunton Doherty (1884-?) of Bath was taken by Augustus Hatch (1845-1891).
Show Details
Hatch had his studio in the Church Block from 1870 until 1890 or 1891.
It is typical of the solemn poses, good clothes, and painted backdrops of the period. The level of ornamentation, particularly on the back of the mounted photograph shows how these mounts served not just as a practical and protective mat for the image, but as an elaborate form of advertising.
The design shows the photographer's "good taste," address, and availability for duplicates.
Carrie Dunton went on to serve as a model and colorist for Bath photographer Charles Higgins.
