Health education with an emphasis in nutrition and dental hygiene began to emerge in the Portland schools in 1924. Lillian L. Jones, a nurse and an educator in nutrition established an "open air" classroom at North School.
The concept was to promote and educate students on healthy habits, such as bathing, proper eating habits, and basic dental care.
