On September 27, 1837 amidst a rough and tumble political campaign, Maine Whigs held a monster rally on the slopes of Munjoy Hill (also called Mount Joy) below the Portland Observatory.

Memorialized in this engraving by local bookseller Samuel Hodeson Colesworthy (1808-1899) are visitors who watched a parade, heard speeches and witnessed a 26-gun salute.

During the cannonade a young artilleryman, George Richardson, was killed by an exploding cartridge.
