Image Info On July 12, 1798, cartographer Francis Joseph Neptune (Passmaquoddy) created this map of the Cobscook River area, in the presence of Robert Pagan who was sent to the area to learn about the St. Croix River for British Commissioner Thomas Barclay.
Show Details
During treaty negotiations between the British and the United States, the "true" St. Croix River was in dispute. According to the Treaty of Paris (1783) the St. Croix River served as a northeast boundary between the United States and Canada, but a number of rivers in that area bore the name "St. Croix."
At a later date, Robert Pagan added lines to this map with pen.
