Image Info After initial plans to land at the Scarborough airfield were thwarted by fog, Charles Lindbergh landed on Old Orchard Beach on July 24, 1927. Lindbergh was on a promotional tour following his trans-Atlantic flight, the first solo flight across the ocean.
Show Details
There are several images of Lindbergh within the Portland Press Herald Glass Negative Collection. Several are from the 1927 trip, while others include Lindberg’s future wife, Anna Morrow, whom he married in 1929. The Morrow family summered on North Haven Island.
The image of Lindbergh walking on the grounds of Portland Flying Service Inc. was likely taken at the Municipal Airport in Scarborough. The Scarborough airport serviced Portland before the current Portland Jetport was established.
