Image Info The Portland Evening Express, along with Chevrolet Motor Company, co-sponsored the July 25th, 1936 Soap Box Derby. 128 local boys between the ages of 9 and 15 entered this qualifying event to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. Park Street was closed off and a 25-foot ramp was built for the starting line, as shown in this unpublished picture.

Earl Hudson won the Portland competition in front of a crowd of 16,000 spectators. Harold Muench of St. Louis won the national event on August 16th.
