Mildred Burrage (1890-1983) studied at the renowned Miss Wheeler's School in Rhode Island between the years 1909 and 1914. During the period, Miss Wheeler traveled to Giverney, France each summer with selected students to study art and the French language. While in France, Miss Wheeler and her students lived next door to Claude Monet and his famous gardens.

With the outbreak of World War I in August of 1914, Mildred was forced to cut her schooling short and leave Giverney to return to her family home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Mildred Burrage would go on to enjoy a very long career in the arts and historic preservation. She is best known for her work with the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s, as well as her paintings on Mica during the second half of her life.
