Image Info This sauce bottle, made in about 1865, was found in the 2008 excavation of a privy on Brown Street in Portland. It was one of a number of items -- glassware and ceramics -- found at 47 Brown Street. Several properties were rented for a number of years.

When sewers replaced the privy, it likely was used to discard items such as this bottle with vertical ribs or flutes, common from the 1850s to the 1900s. The mold push-up in the base dates it to before 1865.
