About Our Historic Images

Vintage Maine Images (VMI) provides high–resolution digital reproductions of original historic documents useful for magazine and newspaper articles, websites, video, advertising, book covers, inserts, theses, or simply hanging on your wall.

Topics cover all aspects of life and locations in New England, from the age of exploration to the present. If you don't find what you're looking for, contact our Image Research Service at (207) 879-0427 x217 or info@vintagemaineimages.com.

Licensing is for one time use and scans are not to be distributed beyond your stated purpose. You will be required to agree to our use policy before purchasing an image.

High–Resolution Digital Files

Digital files are in JPG format with minimal compression, to facilitate downloading and transfer across the Internet, and to allow us to store large amounts of images. Because we offer such high resolution scans, the effects of compression are insignificant. Color files are approximately 40 MB files in RGB format (some black and white scans are in Grayscale format and are 13 MB files). This standard allows you the most flexibility to do with your scan what you want. You can translate it to TIFF format or CMYK to use for printing, or you can keep it a JPG and downsample it to 72 dpi for web uses.

These standards translate to roughly:

Note: some files (of oversized or three dimensional historic items) were created with a digital camera instead of a flatbed scanner and may not meet the above standards. These files are usually 5–9 MB and translate to roughly 300 dpi at 4"x5".

Our digital files are lightly edited to appear as close to the original as possible on our monitors, which may differ significantly from yours. This editing includes tonal levels, brightness/contrast, color adjustments, cropping, and rotation. Scans are not edited to remove blemishes from the original documents, and sharpening filters are not applied. Please keep in mind that, these images are digital scans of aged documents or photographs, and therefore may contain blemishes, scratches, tears, and other imperfections.

High–resolution digital files that you purchase will not have the watermark that appears on the web site. The JPG files will be available for downloading immediately upon purchase. Delivery on CD–ROM is available as well, for a $15 surcharge which includes shipping and handling.

Simply place images you wish to purchase in your cart, price them according to use, and proceed through the secure checkout process where you will be given access to the download area of our site.

Prints

Digital print reproductions are created at the Maine Historical Society with an Epson Stylus Photo 2200, which uses exclusively engineered Epson Archival Inks and MicroCrystal Encapsulation technology. The tiny 0.1 micron ink particles offer a wide color gamut and fine shadow detail, dazzling highlights, and superior fill in solid areas. Standard prints are on 8.5" x 11" luster resin coated photographic paper. Near photographic reproduction quality is produced with an archive life of over 200 years of lightfastness.

We also offer a low–cost option of study print, printed on 8.5" x 11" non-archival paper using an HP Color LaserJet 3600 printer.
