William H. Seward of New York became Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State on March 5, 1861. He served until May 4, 1869.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York in 1849, after serving as governor. Seward was known for his anti-slavery views.

After the Civil War, Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
